Salary Range: ​$105,000 – $115,000​ plus competitive benefits package

THE ROLE

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) seeks a highly effective leader, implementer, communicator, thought partner, project manager and liaison to serve as a Managing Director of the URJ at a pivotal time in the URJ’s development. The Managing Director will directly support the EVP and senior leadership of the organization in implementing a new strategic direction and the systems, structures, and culture needed to achieve its desired impact. As it celebrates its 150th year, the URJ has worked to articulate a clear purpose and vision, core values, theory of change, long-term strategies, and how it will measure its success. With this foundation now clear, the organization seeks a highly competent mid-career professional to work with senior leadership in making the strategic direction a reality. This role will support the EVP and key stakeholders to help the URJ run the business for sustained growth, operational efficiency, and deepening of program impact.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position is part of the Executive Department and reports to the Executive Vice President (EVP) of the URJ. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

STRATEGIC PLANNING & ALIGNMENT

Project manage the strategic direction planning process ensuring organization-wide alignment.

Serve as a key liaison with senior lay and professional leaders to support strategic growth, translate ideas into operating practices, and anticipate and avert challenges which could pose a risk to performance.

Communicate information to “tell the story” of our work and support decision making, day-to-day operations, and engagement of stakeholders, particularly professional staff and Board leaders.

Partner with operational and program departments to ensure org-wide alignment, organizational effectiveness, and employee engagement with the strategic direction.

 

 

PLANNING AND PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Manage annual workflows, including annual planning, goal setting, and budgeting.

Identify and address internal and external trends that contribute directly to performance; elevate strategic and operational issues to continuously improve performance and realize expected results.

 

 

 

PROCESS  & PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Manage operating rhythm of EVP with senior team including flow of work, deadlines, and execution of priorities.

Support the Executive Vice President, CEO, and Vice President of Organizational Effectiveness in working with the Board Chair, Treasurer(s), Executive Board and other key lay leaders as thought-partners and to help ensure they are set up to advance the strategic work of the URJ in their roles.

Lead strategic initiatives and project teams as assigned.

Support additional URJ org-wide priorities as needed.

High integrity individual who builds trust with stakeholders; able to navigate (and respectfully challenge when needed) existing culture and work across areas of organization and styles of leaders to increase alignment, engagement, and productivity. Able to hold sensitive information in confidence and possesses exceptional discernment. and judgment capabilities.

Diplomatic Implementer. Able to manage “up and down” to influence change without direct authority. Thrives in an environment of fast-paced change and knows when and how to pace organizational change for the sake of better, more sustainable, and effective long-term outcomes; can self-manage and has resilience to handle ambiguity and resistance to doing things differently. Emotionally savvy team builder with demonstrated experience pulling individuals together to get things done. Agile learner ready, willing, and able to consistently reflect for individual and organizational growth.

Education. While relevant education and skills are preferred, no specific education or degree is required.

This is a full-time, remote work position, requiring occasional evening and weekend work, and occasional in-person meetings, usually in New York City or DC, as needed.
